Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux: Which OS Should You Pick for Your VPS?

The operating system is the first choice you make on a new VPS, and it is hard to change later without rebuilding the server. The good news: for most projects, any of the popular server distributions will work well. The right pick depends on the software you plan to run, the control panel you want, and what your team already knows.

The short answer

  • Ubuntu LTS: the default for most new projects, Docker, Node.js, Python and AI tooling. Huge community, most tutorials are written for it.

  • Debian: very stable and lightweight. Great for servers you want to set up once and leave running.

  • AlmaLinux / Rocky Linux: free rebuilds compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Choose them for cPanel, CloudLinux-style hosting stacks, or software certified for RHEL.

What about CentOS?

CentOS Linux 7 and 8 have reached end of life and no longer get security updates, so they should not be used for new servers. CentOS Stream still exists, but it is a rolling preview of the next RHEL release, which makes it better for testing than for production. If you have an old CentOS server, AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux are the natural migration targets.

Compare the options

Support lifetime

Ubuntu LTS releases come out every two years with five years of standard updates. Debian stable releases also receive about five years of support including LTS. AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux follow the RHEL cycle of around ten years per major version. Longer support means fewer forced upgrades.

Package freshness

Ubuntu ships newer packages than Debian. The RHEL family is the most conservative, which is good for stability and certified software, but you may need extra repositories for the newest language versions.

Control panels

cPanel/WHM runs on AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux and Ubuntu, so check the panel's current list before you install. Many open-source panels target Ubuntu and Debian first.

Resource use

A minimal install of any of these uses little RAM. What you install on top, such as a database, a panel or containers, matters much more than the distribution itself.

A quick decision guide

  1. Running Docker, Node.js, Python or an AI app? Ubuntu LTS.

  2. Small, stable service you rarely touch? Debian.

  3. cPanel or software built for RHEL? AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux.

  4. Need Windows software, .NET Framework or remote desktop? Choose a Windows server instead.

First steps after installing

  • Update all packages and enable automatic security updates.

  • Create a normal user with sudo and use SSH keys instead of passwords.

  • Turn on a firewall and open only the ports you need.

  • Set up backups before you put real data on the server.

Start with the right VPS

IM HOST Linux VPS gives you KVM virtualization with full root access, NVMe storage, a dedicated IPv4 and an IPv6 /64, in data centers in Egypt, the UK, Poland, Germany and the US. Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux and other operating systems are all available: pick yours when you order, and if the system you need is not on the list, ask our support team and they will install it for you manually. For workloads that need guaranteed CPU, Cloud VPS comes with fully dedicated vCPU and RAM and runs Linux or Windows.
