Linux VPS vs Windows VPS: Key Differences and Which One Fits Your Project

Choosing between a Linux VPS and a Windows VPS is not about which operating system is better. It is about which one your software needs, which one your team can manage, and what the total monthly cost will be. This guide compares both on the points that actually change the decision.

The short answer

  • Choose Linux for websites, PHP, WordPress, Laravel, Node.js, Python, Docker, databases like MySQL and PostgreSQL, bots and most open-source software.

  • Choose Windows when your software only runs on Windows: ASP.NET Framework apps, MS SQL Server workloads that depend on Windows features, desktop applications, accounting or ERP software, trading platforms like MT4/MT5, or a remote desktop for your team.

1. Software compatibility decides first

Start with the application. If it is built for Windows, running it on Linux through compatibility layers is rarely worth the trouble in production. If it is a web stack or open-source tool, Linux is its natural home and most documentation assumes it. Note that modern .NET (formerly .NET Core) runs on both, so a new .NET API can run on Linux too.

2. How you manage the server

  • Linux: managed over SSH with the command line. Very scriptable and lightweight, but it needs someone comfortable with a terminal.

  • Windows: managed through Remote Desktop (RDP) with a familiar graphical interface. Easier for teams used to Windows, and necessary for software with a desktop interface.

3. Resource usage

A minimal Linux server can run comfortably in a small amount of memory, leaving most RAM for your application. Windows Server with its desktop experience uses more RAM and disk at idle. In practice, a Windows VPS usually needs a bit more RAM than a Linux VPS for the same workload.

4. Licensing and total cost

Most Linux distributions are free, so you pay only for the server. Windows Server requires a license, which providers either include in the price or charge separately. When comparing offers, check whether the Windows license is included, and whether extra software such as SQL Server needs its own license.

5. Security and updates

Both can be secured well and both can be left vulnerable. What matters is that you apply updates, close unused ports and use strong authentication. On Linux, use SSH keys and a firewall. On Windows, restrict RDP access, change the default port or allow only trusted IPs, and enable automatic updates. Neither system is "safe by default" on the open internet.

6. Performance

For web workloads, Linux with Nginx or LiteSpeed is the common high-performance choice. For Windows-native workloads, Windows performs best because the software was designed for it. Hardware matters more than the OS: dedicated CPU cores, enough RAM and NVMe storage make a bigger difference than the operating system itself.

Quick comparison

  • Access: Linux — SSH. Windows — Remote Desktop.

  • Best for: Linux — web stacks, open source, containers. Windows — .NET Framework, desktop apps, Windows-only software, remote work.

  • License: Linux — usually free. Windows — required.

  • Idle resource use: Linux — lower. Windows — higher.

Can you switch later?

Yes, but it is a migration, not a setting. Changing the OS means reinstalling the server and moving your data and configuration. Decide based on the software you will run for the next year, not just today.
