VPS in Germany: Hosting in Berlin for EU and DACH Users

A VPS in Germany is the natural choice when your customers are in Germany, Austria or Switzerland (the DACH region), or when clients expect their data to be hosted in Germany specifically rather than "somewhere in the EU". IM HOST's Berlin location currently has Linux VPS and Windows RDP in stock. If you need dedicated servers, n8n hosting or AI agent hosting in stock today, the nearby Warsaw location has the broader range, and the two work well together.
Why Germany for EU and DACH users
Germany is the EU's largest economy and its most populous member state, so for many European businesses it is simply where most customers are. Network distances inside Germany are short, and a Berlin server reaches the rest of the country, Austria and Switzerland over compact paths, which keeps time to first byte low for German-language sites and shops. If you want to see how much location contributes to TTFB in practice, read our guide on server location, TTFB and latency.
There is also a trust factor. German B2B buyers and public-sector clients often ask where data is hosted, and "in Germany" is an answer many of them prefer. That is a commercial expectation, not a legal requirement in itself, but it can decide a deal.
The data protection angle, carefully
Germany is in the EU, so data on a Berlin server stays inside the EU. GDPR applies, and Germany also has national data protection rules alongside it. Switzerland is not in the EU and has its own data protection law. Server location is one part of compliance; how you collect, process, secure and share data matters just as much. Check your own obligations rather than treating the hosting country as the whole answer.
What is in stock in Berlin today
The IM HOST data centers page currently lists two services in Berlin:
Linux VPS: KVM virtualization, NVMe storage and full root access. In Poland and Germany the line-up includes AMD EPYC 7313P plans and AMD Ryzen 9 9950X plans with DDR5 memory, with DDoS protection listed on both. Each VPS has a dedicated IPv4 address and a /64 IPv6 range. It is unmanaged, so you administer the operating system; daily backups are an optional add-on.
Windows VPS / RDP: Hyper-V virtualization with full Administrator access, for Windows applications your team uses over Remote Desktop.
Other services, such as Cloud VPS or dedicated servers, are not on the Berlin stock list right now. Every service can be ordered for any location subject to stock, and the team confirms the location with you before activation.
EPYC 7313P or Ryzen 9 9950X: choosing a Linux VPS line
Both are AMD processors, built for different jobs.
AMD EPYC 7313P is a 16-core server processor from AMD's EPYC 7003 generation, designed for steady multi-threaded server work. It suits many parallel workers, databases handling lots of connections, and services that care more about consistent throughput than peak speed per request.
AMD Ryzen 9 9950X is a recent 16-core processor with very high boost clocks, paired here with DDR5 memory. Fast individual cores help anything that is single-threaded or latency-sensitive per request: PHP and WordPress, the Node.js event loop, game server main threads, and build or test pipelines.
Remember that a VPS gets a set of vCPUs, not the whole chip. If your workload is CPU-bound and you are unsure, measure it. A rough comparison with sysbench:
sudo apt install sysbench
# single-thread speed
sysbench cpu --threads=1 --time=30 run
# all vCPUs
sysbench cpu --threads=$(nproc) --time=30 runSynthetic numbers only go so far. Running your own test suite or a load test against your real app tells you more.
Berlin or Warsaw: deciding between two EU locations
IM HOST has two mainland EU locations, and the choice is usually quick once you answer four questions. Our guide to a VPS in Poland covers Warsaw in more depth.
Where are your users? Mostly Germany, Austria or Switzerland: Berlin. Mostly Poland, the Baltics or eastern EU: Warsaw. Spread across the EU: either works, so test both from real connections.
Which service do you need in stock now? Linux VPS and Windows RDP are listed in both cities. Dedicated servers, n8n hosting and AI agent hosting are currently listed in Warsaw.
Do clients require Germany specifically? If a contract or tender says "hosted in Germany", choose Berlin.
Do you want redundancy? Use both. Run production in one city and keep backups or a standby server in the other. Both are EU countries, so your data stays in the EU either way.
Practical use cases for a German VPS
All of these run on an unmanaged VPS, so you handle the OS. If that model is new to you, our overview of the types of web hosting explains who administers what.
EU-facing websites and shops
A German-language store or a site serving DACH customers benefits from a short path to visitors. Pair the VPS with a page cache and a CDN for static files, and the server location mostly affects dynamic pages such as cart, checkout and account areas.
Development and staging
If your developers are in Europe, a staging server in Berlin keeps SSH sessions, deploys and database work responsive. Linux VPS full root lets you mirror production exactly.
A private WireGuard endpoint
A small Linux VPS makes a reliable WireGuard endpoint for staff who need private access to internal tools from a German IP. A minimal setup on Ubuntu or Debian:
sudo apt install wireguard
wg genkey | sudo tee /etc/wireguard/server.key | wg pubkey | sudo tee /etc/wireguard/server.pub
sudo chmod 600 /etc/wireguard/server.key
# /etc/wireguard/wg0.conf
[Interface]
Address = 10.8.0.1/24
ListenPort = 51820
PrivateKey = <contents of server.key>
[Peer]
# staff laptop
PublicKey = <laptop public key>
AllowedIPs = 10.8.0.2/32
sudo ufw allow 51820/udp
sudo systemctl enable --now wg-quick@wg0This gives laptops private access to the server and anything you bind to its 10.8.0.1 address. To route all of a laptop's traffic through Germany you also need IP forwarding and a NAT rule on the server. Lock down SSH too; our guide to securing a Linux VPS with SSH keys, UFW and Fail2ban covers the basics.
Windows remote desktop for EU staff
Accounting packages and line-of-business Windows apps often run best on a central Windows server that staff reach over RDP. Because RDP is interactive, a server close to the team makes a visible difference. Do not leave RDP open to the whole internet: restrict it by IP in the Windows firewall or put it behind a VPN.
Frequently asked questions
Is a VPS in Germany better than one in Poland?
Neither is better in general. Berlin is the stronger pick for DACH users and "hosted in Germany" requirements; Warsaw has more services in stock and suits eastern EU audiences.
Can I get a dedicated server in Berlin?
Dedicated servers are not on the current Berlin stock list. They are listed in Warsaw, London and Cairo. You can still request Berlin; the team confirms availability before activation.
Does hosting in Germany meet German data protection rules?
It helps with the data location question, but compliance depends on your whole processing setup under GDPR and national rules. Check your obligations with someone qualified.
Can I run a VPN on a German VPS?
Yes. With full root on Linux VPS you can run WireGuard or OpenVPN for your own team. You administer and secure it yourself.
Starting with a server in Berlin
For German and Austrian audiences, or clients who want data hosted in Germany, Berlin is the direct answer, with Linux VPS and Windows RDP currently in stock. Check the latest availability on the data centers page. Support is available 24/7 from real engineers, and the team confirms your location before the server goes live.
