Should You Pick a US or a European VPS If You Are in Egypt?

Short answer: For users in Egypt, a European server usually responds faster than a US server, because Europe is much closer to Egypt and the network path is shorter. A server inside Egypt is closer still. But the deciding factor is where your visitors are, not where you are. A US audience is better served from the US. Test with ping from Egypt before you choose.

How does distance affect speed from Egypt?
Data moves through fibre at a fixed physical speed, so distance adds delay to every round trip. Cairo to Western or Central Europe is a few thousand kilometres. Cairo to the US East Coast is roughly three times as far, and the route crosses the Atlantic. In practice, a server in Europe usually answers a user in Egypt noticeably faster than a server in the US. A server in Cairo usually answers faster still.
Distance is not the whole story. The actual route matters too. Traffic from your internet provider may take a detour before it reaches the data center. That is why you should measure, not assume.
Latency matters most for interactive work:
- Dynamic pages and APIs, where each click waits for the server.
- Remote desktop (RDP) sessions, where every mouse movement is a round trip.
- Trading platforms, where order execution time counts.
- Online games and voice or video calls.
It matters less for static files served through a CDN, for background jobs, and for backups.
Test it yourself from Egypt:
- Rent the smallest plan in each candidate location for one month.
- From your connection in Egypt, run
ping -c 20 <ip>(Windows:ping -n 20 <ip>) and compare the averages and their stability. - Run
traceroute <ip>(Windows:tracert <ip>) to see the path your traffic takes. - Repeat from a mobile network and from a second provider if you can.
- If your visitors are abroad, ask a colleague or customer there to run the same test, or use an online multi-location ping tool.
Why do your visitors matter more than your own location?
You manage the server over SSH or RDP a few times a day. A slightly slower connection for you is a small cost. Your customers load your pages all day. Their distance to the server shapes their experience and your conversions.
So start with your analytics. Look at which countries your traffic and sales come from. Put the server where most of that traffic is. If you have no site yet, put it where your target customers are.
The exception is when you are the main user. A Windows RDP server that you use as your own work desktop should be close to you. For someone in Egypt, that means Cairo or Europe.
Which location fits your use case?
| Your situation | Suggested location | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Audience in Egypt only | Cairo | Shortest path to Egyptian users; data stays in Egypt |
| Audience in Egypt, the Middle East and Europe | Europe (London, Warsaw or Germany), or Cairo if most users are in Egypt | Europe sits between these regions; test both |
| Audience mainly in the US | New York | Closest to US users; distance from Egypt matters little here |
| Trading close to a broker's servers | The city of your broker's trade server (often London or New York) | Order round trips are shorter near the broker |
| Global audience | The location of your largest market, plus a CDN | The CDN serves static files from nodes near each visitor |
| Personal RDP workstation used from Egypt | Cairo or Europe | You are the user, so your own distance decides |
What about data location and regulation?
Server location also decides which rules may apply to the data.
- EU and UK. The GDPR (and the UK GDPR) governs personal data of people in the EU and UK. Its scope depends on whose data you process and where you offer services, not only on where the server sits. Hosting in Europe does not by itself make you compliant.
- Egypt. The Personal Data Protection Law No. 151 of 2020 sets rules for processing personal data, including rules on transferring it outside Egypt. Keeping data on a server in Egypt is one element of compliance. It is not the whole picture.
- US. There is no single federal law equivalent to the GDPR. Rules depend on the sector and the state.
If you handle customer data, payment data or health data, check the requirements with a lawyer before you choose a location. This section is general information, not legal advice.

| London | Cloud VPS, Windows RDP, Linux VPS, dedicated servers, Forex VPS |
| Warsaw | Windows RDP, Linux VPS, dedicated servers, n8n Hosting, AI Agent Hosting |
| Germany | Windows RDP, Linux VPS |
| Cairo | Cloud VPS, Windows RDP, Linux VPS, Intel and AMD dedicated servers |
This list reflects current stock. Available in all our locations, subject to stock; we confirm your location before activation.
VPS and RDP servers use KVM virtualization. They are unmanaged by default, and all ports are open. IM HOST does not publish latency figures for its locations, so run the ping test above before you decide.
FAQ
Is Europe always faster than the US from Egypt?
For users in Egypt, usually yes, because Europe is much closer. The actual result depends on your internet provider's route, so test with ping and traceroute.
Should I host in Cairo or in Europe?
If almost all your users are in Egypt, Cairo gives the shortest path. If your users are spread across Egypt, the Gulf and Europe, test both and compare.
Does a CDN remove the need to choose a location?
No. A CDN speeds up static files such as images, CSS and scripts. Dynamic pages, APIs and database queries still go to your server, so its location still matters.
Does hosting in Egypt make me compliant with Law 151/2020?
Not by itself. Data location is one element of compliance. This is general information, not legal advice.
