Windows VPS for .NET and ASP.NET: Requirements, Setup and Performance Tips

If you build with .NET, your hosting choice depends on which .NET you use. Classic ASP.NET on the .NET Framework needs Windows and IIS. Modern .NET (6, 8 and later) runs on Windows or Linux, but many teams still prefer Windows for IIS, SQL Server and familiar tooling. This guide covers what a Windows VPS needs to run .NET apps well, how to set it up, and how to keep it fast.
.NET Framework or modern .NET?
.NET Framework 4.x (ASP.NET Web Forms, MVC 5, WCF): Windows only. A Windows VPS with IIS is the natural host.
Modern .NET (ASP.NET Core): cross-platform. Runs behind IIS on Windows, or behind Nginx on Linux. Choose Windows if you depend on Windows-only libraries, Windows authentication or SQL Server features tied to Windows.
Minimum server requirements
CPU: 2 cores for a single small app; 4 or more for several apps, background services or a database on the same server.
RAM: 4 GB is a workable minimum for one app with IIS. If SQL Server runs on the same VPS, plan for 8 GB or more, because SQL Server uses memory for its cache.
Storage: SSD or NVMe, with room for logs, Windows updates and database growth.
Access: full Administrator rights to install IIS roles, the .NET Hosting Bundle and SSL certificates.
Setting up IIS for ASP.NET Core
Install the Web Server (IIS) role from Server Manager.
Install the matching .NET Hosting Bundle for your runtime version, then restart IIS.
Publish your app (for example with
dotnet publish -c Release) and copy it to the server.Create a site in IIS pointing to the publish folder, with its own application pool set to "No Managed Code" for ASP.NET Core.
Bind your domain, install an SSL certificate, and force HTTPS.
SQL Server on the same VPS?
For small and medium apps, running SQL Server Express on the same server is common. Note that SQL Server Express limits each database to 10 GB and uses limited memory and CPU. If your data or traffic will grow beyond that, plan for a licensed edition or a separate database server. Always set a maximum memory value for SQL Server so it leaves room for IIS and Windows.
Performance tips
Use one application pool per app so a problem in one does not affect the others.
Enable response compression and static file caching in IIS.
Turn off application pool idle time-out for apps that must respond instantly, or use Application Initialization to warm them up.
Keep logs on a schedule: IIS logs can fill a disk quietly.
Watch CPU and memory in Task Manager or Performance Monitor during peak hours, and resize when usage stays high.
Security basics
Restrict Remote Desktop to trusted IPs and use strong passwords.
Run app pools under their own identities with the least privileges they need.
Do not expose SQL Server's port to the internet unless necessary.
Keep Windows, IIS and .NET runtimes updated.
Running modern .NET on Linux instead
If your app is ASP.NET Core with no Windows-only dependencies, a Linux VPS with Nginx as a reverse proxy is a valid, lighter option. Compare both in Linux VPS vs Windows VPS.
